Trust Summit is the annual flagship event of IIT Bombay Trust Lab, a pioneering hub for digital trust research.

The second edition of Trust Summit, on September 22, 2023, assembled a diverse and influential cohort of leaders, pioneers, and experts in the domain of digital trust from across industry, academia, and the government at IIT Bombay’s
 Victor Menezes Convention Center (VMCC).

Keynote by Prof. Shafi Goldwasser

Constructing and Deconstructing Trust:
Employing Cryptographic Recipe in the ML Domain

For decades now, cryptographic tools and models have been developed to transform platforms controlled by worst-case adversaries to trustworthy platforms. In this talk I will describe how to use a general cryptographic recipe and specific cryptographic tools to build trust in various phases of the machine learning pipelines or prove that at times it is impossible to achieve. We will touch on achieving verification, robustness and privacy. If time permits, we will show how cryptographic tools can be brought to build trust in the legal domain.

Prof. Shafi Goldwasser is the Director of Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing and is a professor at UC Berkeley (EECS), MIT (EECS) and Weizmann Institute (CS, Applied Math). Goldwasser holds B.S. in Applied Mathematics, CMU (1979), and M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1984) in CS, UC Berkeley. Goldwasser’s discoveries include the introduction of probabilistic encryption, interactive zero-knowledge protocols, elliptic curve primality testings, hardness of approximation proofs for combinatorial problems, and combinatorial property testing. Goldwasser received the ACM Turing Award (2012), Gödel Prize (1993, 2001), ACM Hopper Award (1996), RSA Award in Mathematics (1998), ACM Athena Award (2008), Franklin Medal (2010), IEEE Piore Award (2011), Simons Foundation Investigator Award (2012), BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2018), and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award (2021). Goldwasser is a member of the NAS, NAE, AAAS, Russian and Israeli Academies of Science, and London Royal Mathematical Society. Goldwasser holds honorary degrees from many universities.
