VENUE: IIT Bombay
Summer School on Foundations of Hardware Security
The secure implementation of cryptographic algorithms and other security and privacy-sensitive applications has become critically important in today’s digital landscape. Even when mathematically sound cryptographic primitives are used, their implementations can leak sensitive information through various side channels, including power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, execution timing variations, and fault injection. Such side-channel vulnerabilities are powerful enough to compromise widely deployed schemes such as AES and even modern post-quantum cryptographic algorithms within seconds to a few hours.
The goal of this summer school is to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills required to securely implement cryptographic and security-sensitive algorithms in both hardware and software, and to rigorously evaluate their resistance against side-channel and fault-based attacks.
The aim of the summer school is to:
- Introduce students to the fundamental principles of hardware security and implementation security
- Provide hands-on experience in mounting and analyzing side-channel attacks, fault attacks, and timing-based attacks
- Teach practical countermeasures, including masking, hiding, and shuffling techniques
- Introduce architectural and system-level defenses such as Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) and Hardware Security Modules (HSMs)
- Develop the ability to critically evaluate the security of hardware and software implementations against real-world attack models
Over two intensive weeks, participants will engage in:
- Daily lecture sessions delivered by leading researchers and practitioners
- Lab work and demonstrations of real-world tools
- Topic-specific tutorials and Q&A sessions with speakers
